Edward Purcell came to America from Ireland and settled in Hampton VA. He was a member of the Virginia's Colonial Soldiers and fought for the British in the French and Indian War. He had three sons: Jonathan, Edward, and William. They were all Revolutionary War veterans. They came to Indiana in 1790 or 1797. We are unsure of the exact date. Jonathan had purchased eleven (11) 400-acre donations from local patriot Fransis Vigo. Jonathan's eldest son Noah settled in Palmyra Township, and he built this house for his son Noah around 1833 to 1850. John was a wealthy landowner and served as Sheriff of Knox County from 1830 to 1835.
The house presents itself with photo opportunities inside and out, whether it be at the massive front porch, within the entryway with its impressive stairway, or within any of the meeting rooms. Outside you will enjoy the beautiful landscape with its manicured lawn, its gazebo, its walkway under an arbor, or the flower garden with its arched entry, fountain, and beautiful flowers.
